From Landfill to Lunch: 26,000 lbs of Low-cost Baby Food Just Landed in Vancouver

If you've been a part of our community whatsapp, you’ve probably been in on this hot tip already… because our moms’ have been spreading the word like wildfire! And if you missed it, we’re here to bring you up to speed.

You might’ve seen Planet Food pop up in your feeds this week, even grabbing a segment on Global News. And there’s a reason for that… they’re doing good for the planet, and your wallet. Which is a good enough reason to place an order ASAP. Here’s the full story…

Planet Food is a Vancouver-based tech company building smarter food systems that connect local growers, buyers, and communities. They’re only a year old (birthday buddies!), but they've already partnered with over 1,400 farms and 200+ CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) brands to get quality, locally sourced food where it needs to go. But their latest mission? Keeping thousands of cases of perfectly good baby food out of the landfill - and into the hands of families who actually need it.

How It Started

It began with a phone call. A CEO from a large food manufacturer came to Planet Food with a problem: 10,000 cases of high-quality baby food that was about to be dumped - not because anything was wrong with it, but because it was nearing its expiry date. Planet Food took it all into their 20,000 sq ft warehouse and put it up for families to order. It sold out in 48 hours, with around 325 families picked up their orders.

That moment changed everything for the Planet Food team. They realized this wasn't a one-time problem - huge amounts of perfectly good food were being wasted every single week, while families across the city were struggling with grocery bills that just keep climbing.

What They're Doing About It

Planet Food made a decision: redirect their energy to diverting this food waste and getting quality products into family homes at low prices - for as long as they possibly can. As of June 10, the first of a massive 26,000lb shipment arrived at their warehouse. Orders were already flooding in before the truck even pulled up - word had spread fast! Their big goal: move 1 million pounds of quality food in one year and keep going - genuinely disrupting the local food supply chain so that struggling with grocery prices becomes a thing of the past.

How to Order

Ordering is simple and everything is done online:

  1. Head to planetfood.app/shop

  2. Use promo code GET5 at checkout (for $5 off)

  3. If the product is already in the warehouse, you can schedule a pickup time right after ordering. If it's still in transit, you'll get a notification the moment it's ready.

The more orders that come in, the more Planet Food can prove to large manufacturers that there's real demand for this - which means they can keep the partnership going and keep rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste.

Why It Matters

This is one of those rare situations where doing something good for your family and doing something good for the planet are exactly the same thing. Less waste, lower prices, quality food - it's a win all around. So go forth, and spread the word…

Hooray for Planet Food
